Game design and narrative design

With "waves" as the theme of the game jam, we ideated on various game mechanics and settings that would be suitable. We took inspiration from our programmer Luke Li, who makes a video game for his girlfriend every year. With Valentine's Day a month away, I proposed a game about finding your true love. The mechanic is waving, which works as a location device. You play as Luke, hunting for your girlfriend Rose who is invisible among a crowd. Each time you successfully locate her, you have a short time to navigate around obstacles and get closer to her. I developed a narrative framework for the full game development, telling the story of their courtship from meeting at school, to an encounter in a park, to a date at a May Day concert (which we developed), to a serious date in a restaurant, to a proposal at an airport. Each level would feature hazards and obstacles of increasing difficulty, and a reunion with Rose as prize.
